From humble beginnings to international acclaim, the New Zealand Cavaliers have forged a storied legacy in Sevens rugby. Established with a bold vision for excellence, the team has evolved through memorable championship triumphs and groundbreaking performances, embodying a relentless commitment to the sport. Each chapter of their history reflects the passion, innovation, and determination that continues to inspire players and fans alike.

FOUNDED IN 2020

  • New Zealand Cavaliers (Cavs) are a proudly multicultural and inclusive composite team.  At the heart of our kaupapa are two core values: Whānau and Kotahitanga. Though we come from diverse backgrounds, we unite as one whānau — Ko Tātou Te Tahi, "We Are One".  At the Cavs, we celebrate and encourage players to embrace and represent their heritage in a warm, respectful, and welcoming environment.  It’s this strong cultural foundation that sets us apart and inspires many players to don the Cavaliers jersey.

Established in 2020, the Cavs began with humble roots and have since earned international recognition, carving out a proud legacy in Sevens rugby.  Our journey began when founder Lucky Smythe, alongside a few passionate, like-minded friends, seized the opportunity to field a girls’ team in the World Youth Sevens — with minimal preparation.  In a historic debut match broadcast live on SKY TV, the team defeated New Zealand Māori, marking the beginning of something special.  The following year Shaun Simpson joined the team and both Lucky and Shaun have been the main drivers behind the Cavaliers success.

Our girls’ teams have seen consistent success.  We placed 3rd in each of our first three World School Sevens tournaments, and in 2022, were the only New Zealand team to reach the semifinals, alongside Australia, Two Blues Sydney, and champions Japan.

Our boys’ teams, launched in 2021, have quickly established themselves as contenders — reaching the semifinals in the last three tournaments and narrowly missing the title in the 2023 final in a dramatic finish against New Zealand.

In 2024, our Men’s team claimed the International Open Men’s Championship at the Borneo Sevens.  Looking ahead to 2025, both our Men’s and Women’s squads will travel to France to compete in the prestigious Eaast tournaments in Cognac and Haguenau.

This is just the beginning of our story — and the Cavs’ legacy is only growing stronger.

The New Zealand Cavaliers have a proud history of success, securing major victories on both national and international stages. From historic championship titles to recent standout performances in elite tournaments, the team has consistently proven its strength, skill, and determination. Each win is a testament to the Cavaliers' legacy and ongoing pursuit of excellence in the fast-paced world of rugby.
